I Thought I Was Being The Best Version Of Me
Just like my parents taught me to, I worked hard at home, at school, in my community, and at work. And guided by my values, I have always strived to be an agent of social change. I moved up the career ladder, volunteered with a youth
group, and lived a financially stable life. I thought I was be
ing the best version of me.
But some 15 years ago several relationships, both personal and professional challenged me to raise the bar on the quality of my communication style, my empathic listening, my boundary-setting, my self-care strategies. New leadership opportunities ushered in new levels of responsibility, not only to the work, but especially to the care needed to be in healthy relationship with colleagues and to lead with humility, mindfulness, and courage. I knew my typical reactions to difficult interpersonal dynamics would not be enough. Yet, I couldn’t fully see how my behavioral patterns were getting in the way of my capacity to be in right relationship with myself and in turn with others.
Until the day I discovered Dr. Marshall B. Rosenberg’s framework of Non-Violent Communic
ation. With expert guidance from coaches and a strong community of practice, I learned to take responsibility for my feelings, to clarify what my values and needs are, to examine situations without judgment in order to remain steadfastly connected to my humanity and the humanity of those around me. I gained skills and tools to practice true self-care; and to build bridges rather than burn them when searching for solutions. Most of all, through coaching, I learned that it starts with me. I have the power to learn, to unlearn, to choose.
I chose a life-changing path; one that unlocked my potential to be the best version of me: as a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife, a leader, a colleague, a friend, and a member of my community.
